Awful 2nd period hurts ‘Yotes

One-game winning streaks won’t do it for a last-place team.
The Coyotes, trying to go into a five-day break on a positive note, failed to maintain the early momentum they built up and were hammered by the Rangers 7-3 Saturday night at Jobing.com Arena before a crowd of 14,513.
The Coyotes stormed out of the gate but had a miserable second period as they allowed four goals.
They were equal-opportunity givers throughout the night as three Rangers - Jaromir Jagr had four points, with Jason Ward and Martin Straka getting three each.
Two firsts gave Phoenix its first two goals.
In the first period, Matt Jones got his initial NHL goal; and in the final period, Patrick Fischer notched his. Fischer’s was a memorable one, as he stole the puck from Jagr. He was thorn in the Coyotes’ side throughout the game. Fredrik Sjostrom added a late goal for the Yotes.
The turning point came in the second period. The Coyotes (3-9), mired in the cellar of the Pacific Division, were down 3-1 at the 14:37 mark when they caught a huge break. The Rangers’ Ryan Hollweg was nailed for a double-minor for unsportsmanlike conduct and charging, giving the Coyotes a man advantage for four minutes.
And then . . . nothing.
The Coyotes, who needed to get back into the flow they had for the game’s first 10 minutes, failed. They got a couple of shots on goal, and when the teams were back at even strength the Rangers had all the momentum. Less than a minute later, Straka scored his second goal.
It was a bitter loss for goalie David LeNeveu, who played brilliantly in a 6-2 victory over Edmonton earlier in the week.
This was the first of a four-game Western trip for the Rangers, who evened their record at 5-5.
Bild des Spiels:

Wie immer: jeder jubelt - nur Phoenix nicht…
