Coyotes play well but lose

The Coyotes lost yet again on Saturday night but in a strange way raised the bar with a solid performance against an elite team.
San Jose beat Phoenix 2-1 at Jobing.com Arena.
Two lapses by the Coyotes during a seven-minute stretch of the second period - a defensive gaffe and a sloppy line change - led to San Jose’s goals and Phoenix’s 12th defeat in its first 16 games.
The Coyotes, playing without injured forwards Shane Doan, Mike Comrie and Steven Reinprecht, outshot the Sharks 39-18 and killed all four San Jose power plays.
“It was one of our best games of the year and one of the most complete games that we’ve played,” right wing Georges Laraque said. “If we’d played like this every game we wouldn’t have the record we have now.”
Center Yanic Perreault gave the Coyotes a 1-0 lead when he scored his first goal with Phoenix late in the first period.
A second Phoenix goal was disallowed.
Coyotes center Dave Scatchard suffered a leg injury in the third period, left the game and did not return.
Coach Wayne Gretzky said Scatchard probably would miss Tuesday’s game vs. Minnesota.
The Coyotes play eight games each against Pacific Division powers San Jose, Anaheim and Dallas.
So far, Phoenix is 0-5-0-0 against those teams and has been outscored 15-4.
Report
Cheers
Phoenix’s penalty killers, led by Keith Ballard, played with hustle and grit and did not allow a goal.
Jeers
Coyotes defenseman Ed Jovanovski made a sloppy pass that cost Phoenix valuable seconds during a five-on-three advantage in the first period.
Our three stars
1. Patrick Marleau, Sharks, goal, assist.
2. Steve Bernier, Sharks, goal, assist.
3. Yanic Perreault, Coyotes, goal, solid night in face-off circles.
View from the press box
The Coyotes need someone to spark their offense and bring some energy into their rink. Just a thought here, but perhaps they should think about recalling old friend Tyson Nash from their top affiliate in San Antonio. Nash notched eight points (five goals and three assists) in his first 13 games with the Rampage, and is itching to get back to the NHL. Why not give him another shot?

Confident Fischer aids offense in need of lift

With three of their top six forwards sidelined because of injuries, clearly some of Phoenix’s complementary players are going to need to play bigger roles for a while.
Patrick Fischer of Switzerland is one of those players.
Fischer, 31, is in his first NHL season and quickly learning to play in the league’s tighter rinks and at its faster pace and higher intensity.
The season’s first three weeks didn’t go well for Fischer, and coach Wayne Gretzky scratched him from the lineup five times in 10 games. Slowly, Fischer has started to contribute.
Entering Saturday, Fischer had notched two goals and two assists in his past five games.
“At the start, everything was new; I wasn’t playing good, and I was thinking too much,” Fischer said. “That didn’t work because I’m an instinct player. But I’m feeling better now and feeling more confident. Confidence is everything.”
Fischer has a Latin phrase tattooed on his right forearm that means, “Go your own way.”
No, it’s not a tribute to the Fleetwood Mac song but rather Fischer’s motto.
“I’m not a guy who likes to follow other people,” Fischer said. “That (phrase) is the way I live my life. I’m a positive person and I make the decisions that I think are right, and sometimes I fall on my nose. But when I do fall on my nose, I learn.”
Doan’s long day
Shane Doan said he had a long day with back specialist Dr. Robert Watkins on Friday.
The consultation included two MRIs, a bone scan and an injection.
“I might have been glowing when I left,” Doan quipped Saturday.
The Coyotes captain was in the joking mood because Watkins told him he would need only rest and not surgery.
“Having surgery was something that I really didn’t want to have to do,” said Doan, who likely won’t skate for another four or five days. “Skating’s really the thing that causes it to get sore. I don’t know how and I don’t know why, it just seems to. I’ve got to get to the point where it’s OK to skate and not hurt after.”
Doan is expected to be sidelined until around Thanksgiving, give or take a game or two.
Right wing Fredrik Sjostrom said Doan would be missed.
“We miss him a lot on the ice, but we miss him even more in the locker room, especially the young guys,” Sjostrom said. “As long as I’ve been here, he’s always been really supportive, and through tough times he’s the one that stands out and really helps you out. It’s great to have a guy like him in the locker room. He’s a hell of a player, but he’s a bigger person.”
Ice chip
Defenseman Nick Boynton, who is nursing a foot injury, skated in the warm-ups but did not play Saturday.
