Gretzky isn’t throwing in towel

Despite his team’s 4-12 record, Wayne Gretzky said Monday he is not losing enthusiasm for coaching the Coyotes.

“Nobody’s liking that we’re 4-12, but there’s still a long way to go,” Gretzky said. “If we continue to progress and get the effort like we did on Saturday night (vs. San Jose), then we’re going to get better. That’s our job and responsibility as coaches, to make sure we do get better.”

Gretzky said if someone had told him before the season started that the Coyotes would lose 12 of their first 16 games, he wouldn’t have believed them.

“It’s not fun after games, but the situation we’re in as coaches becomes more and more apparent and more and more important in that we’ve got to come into the (dressing) room and we’ve got to show the things that we need to do to become better,” Gretzky said. ” . . . We have to be sort of the energy people that move forward each and every day.”

No temporary captain
Gretzky doesn’t plan to name an interim captain while Shane Doan rests his ailing back for the next two weeks or so. Instead, the Coyotes will have three alternate captains in each game instead of two.

“You only have one captain on a team, and Shane is our captain,” Gretzky said.

Scatchard to play?
Center Dave Scatchard’s left leg still is sore from when he injured it Saturday night, but Scatchard practiced with teammates Monday and expects to play tonight.

“It looks like everything was working pretty well (at Monday’s practice),” Scatchard said. “It’s sore, but it’s a good kind of sore. It’s like bumps-and-bruises sore, not something-is-broken sore. I’m ecstatic.”

Ricci on Roy
Patrick Roy was among those inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame on Monday night.

Center Mike Ricci was Roy’s teammate with Colorado in 1996 when the Avalanche won the Stanley Cup.

Ricci said Roy’s confidence was impressive.

“I think he comes across as cocky to other people, but to teammates he comes across as confident,” Ricci said. “He would tell us straight out, ‘We’re going to win tonight’ or ‘I’m not going to let in a lot of goals.’ Not too many guys would say that, and he would tell us that with a straight face. I’d say nine and a half times out of 10, he would only let in one goal or less.”

Ice chips
Gretzky said goalie Curtis Joseph would start tonight. Joseph has stopped 50 of 53 shots in his past two starts…. Defenseman Nick Boynton, who is nursing a foot injury, said he hopes to play.

Scatchard’s status uncertain

Coyotes General Manager Mike Barnett said indications were Dave Scatchard suffered only a sprained left knee and didn’t tear any ligaments when the center was injured during the first period of Saturday’s 2-1 loss to San Jose.

Scatchard’s availability for Tuesday’s game against visiting Minnesota is uncertain, however, and he will be re-evaluated today by team medical personnel.

“The good news,” Barnett said, “was that he walked out on his own. He played most of the second period with it, but then had to shut it down. Hopefully, it’s not too serious.”

Forward Josh Gratton was recalled from San Antonio after a three-game stint in the American Hockey League.

The Coyotes (4-12-0-0) already are without forwards Shane Doan (back), Mike Comrie (foot) and Steven Reinprecht (shoulder).

“We had 85 goals and 180 points in the press box between those three guys,” Barnett said. “That’s about two points per game.”

Doan and Comrie could return around Thanksgiving, Barnett said. Reinprecht is out until the All-Star break.

Defenseman Nick Boynton, meanwhile, is making progress after being hit in the foot by a puck during the Coyotes’ 1-0 loss last week against Dallas. X-rays were negative and Barnett said Boynton could be available Tuesday.

“He was getting (physical) therapy all day (Saturday) and wanted to play, but when he tried to put his skate on, it just wouldn’t fly,” Barnett said.

East Valley Tribune:

Scatchard playing through injury

By Matt Paulson, Tribune
November 14, 2006
Perhaps in a former life, Dave Scatchard was a U.S. Postal Service courier — because it seems nothing can keep him from his job.

Instead of having to overcome snow, rain, heat or gloom of night, the Coyotes forward has battled through a broken nose, the loss of his two front teeth and a severe leg cramp the past two seasons without missing a game.

“I’ve had a pretty healthy career so to speak and saved most of my surgeries for the summer time,” Scatchard said Monday. “So as long as I can play and get through the year, then I’ve got the summer to get everything fixed afterwards. I’m just happy that I’m going to get to play and keep playing.”

Scatchard’s leg injury occurred in the first period of Saturday’s game. At the time the Coyotes feared he might be out for at least a few games.

Instead Scatchard was back at practice Monday, skating as if the injury never occurred.

“I felt actually really, really good (Monday),” said Scatchard, who hurt his leg when he fell awkwardly into the boards but continued to play until early in the third. “I don’t know if a nerve got pinched in my leg or it was just the calf seizing up to protect it, but for whatever reason the third period, I couldn’t get through it. I iced it down the past two days, and it felt pretty good.”

Thinking Scatchard wouldn’t be able to play, Phoenix called up Josh Gratton from San Antonio of the American Hockey League. Coach Wayne Gretzky said Gratton would be in the lineup anyway.

NO REGRETS

Despite his team’s awful start, Gretzky said Phoenix’s 4-12 record has not curbed his enthusiasm for coaching.

“It’s not fun after games, but that’s the situation we’re in,” he said. “As coaches it becomes more and more apparent and more and more important (that) we’ve got to come into this room and we’ve got to show the things that we need to do to become better, things we need to do to correct. We need to be the energy people that move forward each and every day.  . . . Nobody is liking that we’re 4-12, but it’s still a long way to go. If we continue to progress and get the effort that we did Saturday, we’re going to get better.”
