Blues claim Perrault off waivers

The St. Louis Blues have dipped into the waiver pool to claim centre Joel Perrault from Phoenix.
Perrault, 23, had a strong camp with the Coyotes, earning the second-line centre job to start the season, but was waived after producing only two points and a minus-2 rating in nine games. He has four points in 14 career NHL games.
Phoenix recently signed veteran centre Yanic Perreault, who is expected to take over the second-line centre role vacated by his similarly-named but far less experienced predecessor.
The 6-foot-1, 197-pound forward was acquired by the Coyotes at the trade deadline last season from Anaheim in exchange for veteran defenceman Sean O’Donnell.

Players get hard skate

Coach Wayne Gretzky abandoned his good-cop approach to the Coyotes’ woes Monday and shifted into bad-cop mode by running an hourlong practice that was nearly skating-only at Jobing.com Arena.
The Coyotes have lost nine of their first 12 games and do not play again until Friday.
After starting the season 1-3-0, Gretzky took the team bowling, hoping the outing would help team chemistry and spark more victories.
The move failed, so Gretzky has turned to more in-your-face techniques.
Gretzky ended Monday’s practice with a five-minute on-ice lecture, during which he pointed out, between expletives, what bothered him most about Saturday’s 7-3 home loss to the New York Rangers.
Gretzky then addressed the media and announced that the players can expect another grueling workout today.
“It’s one thing to get beat, and it’s another thing not to have a great effort,” Gretzky said. ” . . . We were just basically talking about the fact that at this level, you’ve got to play with a strong effort, and if you don’t you’re going to get beat every night. That’s really what my message was.”
Gretzky said he probably would have skated the team just as hard had they won Saturday, and many of the players were not surprised by the intense workout.
“To be honest with you, I expected it earlier,” right wing Fredrik Sjostrom said. “There’s nothing to say except we deserved this, 10 times over. Sometimes, talk just doesn’t cut it.”
After Gretzky and the other coaches left the ice Monday, center Jeremy Roenick essentially challenged his teammates “to come together or get out.”
As for Monday’s skate-heavy practice, Roenick said: “I’ve never seen a team play better because they got ’skated.’ A team plays better because they want to play better and they focus themselves.”
Not hiring Hitchcock
Gretzky vehemently denied rumors that former Philadelphia Flyers coach Ken Hitchcock would soon join the Coyotes in some capacity.
“The only thing I’ve said to Ken was to come out and spend a few days with me and get away and play some golf and watch some hockey out here if he wanted to,” Gretzky said. “As far as him coming on board with us, (the answer is) unequivocally no.”
Welcome aboard
Center Yanic Perreault practiced with his new teammates for the first time since being signed Sunday.
“It was a tough practice, but in my case I needed it,” Perreault said. “I’ve been away from the game for a while, and this will help me get ready for my first game.”
To make room for Perreault, defenseman Keith Yandle was reassigned to San Antonio of the American Hockey League.
A tough crowd
Sjostrom scored what he called probably the best goal of his career Saturday, when he skated nearly the length of the ice, weaved his way around defenders and capped his rush with an acrobatic shot that beat goalie Henrik Lundqvist.
“We need him playing at that level all the time,” Gretzky said of Sjostrom, the 11th overall pick in the 2001 NHL draft. “We continuously talk to Freddie about it. He has to step up and be the guy that does it every night. The excuse of being young is over with now for Freddie.”

Needing help at center, the Coyotes signed free agent Yanic Perreault on Sunday to a contract that will expire at the end of this season.
Perrault’s deal will be worth close to $625,000, and there will be no incentives built into it.
As reported last week in the Republic, the Coyotes began negotiations with Perreault once they learned center Steven Reinprecht would be sidelined longer than first expected because of a broken right clavicle.
Reinprecht now is expected to be out until February.
Perreault, 35, is coming off a career-high 57-point season with Nashville last season. His power-play and face-off expertise are much needed by Phoenix.

Coyotes agree to deal with Perreault
Darren Dreger
10/29/2006 4:31:02 PM
Sources tell TSN that the Phoenix Coyotes have agreed to a one-year deal with veteran centre Yanic Perreault worth $700,000.
Perreault, believed to be fully recovered from abdominal surgery, previously turned down contract gestures from both Chicago and the New York Islanders.
The Ottawa Senators, Calgary Flames and Tampa Bay Lightning also showed interest.
Perreault scored 22 goals and dished out 35 assists in 69 games with the Nashville Predators last season.
In 740 career games he has totals of 217 goals and 247 assists.

Gna….)
Joseph rests, remains Coyotes No. 1 goalie
Jim Gintonio
The Arizona Republic
Oct. 29, 2006 12:00 AM
Curtis Joseph is a man of few words, and a goaltender with many victories.
Right now, he’d love to do a little less talking and a lot more playing, but he’s getting an extended break. He hasn’t played in the past two games, sitting in favor of David LeNeveu, and the Coyotes have five days off before their next game.
“I feel good,” said Joseph, 39, who ranks No. 6 on the all-time NHL win list with 430.
He’s off to a 2-5 start this season, but at times he hasn’t received offensive support, and he’s been peppered with power-play shots. A year ago, Joseph got off to a quick start.
“It’s a different set of circumstances this year,” said Joseph, in his 17th season.
Coach Wayne Gretzky, who stressed Joseph will remain the No. 1 goalie, said when a team is on a winning streak, “guys who aren’t playing well can be hidden a little bit, so there’s an exposure for each and every player when things aren’t going well.”
“Curtis hasn’t been our problem. Curtis to a man is their goalie, and he practices hard every day. As I said from day one, we needed somebody to take the pressure off of him, both from a mental aspect and physical aspect.”
With LeNeveu getting the call the past two games, that means Joseph will be well rested when Phoenix visits Anaheim on Friday.
“When Curtis is fresh, he’s a tremendous goaltender,” Gretzky said. “When you have to continually play him, anyone would get tired out. We’re not concerned about Curtis. This is a nice break for him, and when he gets back in there, I’m sure he’s going to be the guy that we know he can be.”
LeNeveu said Joseph’s work ethic impresses him.
“He works his butt off every day in practice,” he said. “He’s constantly trying to get better like every other player.”
Hall of Famer Grant Fuhr, the Coyotes’ goaltending coach, said rest never hurts a goalie but joked, “He might not see it that way. Actually, I’m sure he doesn’t see it that way. But in the long run over the course of 82 games, I think it’s going to be really important.”
Fuhr played 19 seasons in the NHL and, asked when age becomes a factor, he said, “When your mind lets it, more than anything. As you get older, if you start to get nagging injuries, your body starts to get sore, then the mind starts to get old. Curtis still feels pretty young.”
Joseph is in the final year of his contract and said he wasn’t concerned about what’s lies ahead.
Return of Tocchet would help Gretzky, Coyotes
John Gambadoro
Special for azcentral.com

One of the biggest losses for the Phoenix Coyotes over the last year has been that of assistant coach Rich Tocchet. Tocchet, who served as head coach Wayne Gretzky’s right-hand last season, was granted an indefinite leave of absence last February to deal with accusations pertaining to his involvement in a gambling ring.
Nearly a year later no charges have been brought against Tocchet by the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office, and you have to start wondering if there ever will be. The Coyotes are working to have Tocchet reinstated and are hopeful that they can get him back to the team this season. And although he wouldn’t be on the bench during games, Tocchet would serve his role as assistant coach on the ice during practices, where he is most valuable, and up in the booth during games.
The return of Tocchet could be a shot in the arm for Gretzky, who is quickly learning that assistant Barry Smith is much better served as the No. 3 man on the staff and not the No. 2. Tocchet was on the fast track to becoming a head coach before the gambling probe derailed his dream. It is almost a year later and time for Commissioner Gary Bettman to allow Tocchet to return to his profession and be reunited with Gretzky.
The Coyotes did get a spectacular performance in goal from David LeNeveu Thursday night, but that may not stop them from considering a deal with the San Jose Sharks that would net them goalie Evgeni Nabokov. The 31-year-old Russian has been splitting time with Vesa Toskala, who is 5-0 with a 1.99 goals against average this season. But Nabokov costs much more than Toskala, and the Sharks could be looking to deal him while he is in the first of a four-year contract extension worth $21.5 million.
San Jose is looking for a physical defenseman and could be interested in Nick Boynton. Nabokov won the Calder trophy as the NHL’s top rookie in 2001 and led the Sharks to the Western Conference Finals in 2003-04. With Curtis Joseph on a one-year contract, Nabokov would come in as the No. 1 goalie and give Phoenix stability at the position going forward.
The Coyotes could also benefit from bringing Tyson Nash back from the minors and sending Patrick Fischer down. Not that Nash is going to give the Coyotes the scoring they have lacked, but his energy and veteran leadership could come in handy right now as the team faces some adversity with a 3-8 start.
Hard to imagine but the Arizona Cardinals have actually rushed for fewer yards this season than they did at the same point last season. And while Edgerrin James has been struggling, he actually leads the NFL in rushing attempts. So it’s not like the Cardinals aren’t trying to run the ball, they are. They just aren’t any good at it.

Awful 2nd period hurts ‘Yotes

One-game winning streaks won’t do it for a last-place team.
The Coyotes, trying to go into a five-day break on a positive note, failed to maintain the early momentum they built up and were hammered by the Rangers 7-3 Saturday night at Jobing.com Arena before a crowd of 14,513.
The Coyotes stormed out of the gate but had a miserable second period as they allowed four goals.
They were equal-opportunity givers throughout the night as three Rangers - Jaromir Jagr had four points, with Jason Ward and Martin Straka getting three each.
Two firsts gave Phoenix its first two goals.
In the first period, Matt Jones got his initial NHL goal; and in the final period, Patrick Fischer notched his. Fischer’s was a memorable one, as he stole the puck from Jagr. He was thorn in the Coyotes’ side throughout the game. Fredrik Sjostrom added a late goal for the Yotes.
The turning point came in the second period. The Coyotes (3-9), mired in the cellar of the Pacific Division, were down 3-1 at the 14:37 mark when they caught a huge break. The Rangers’ Ryan Hollweg was nailed for a double-minor for unsportsmanlike conduct and charging, giving the Coyotes a man advantage for four minutes.
And then . . . nothing.
The Coyotes, who needed to get back into the flow they had for the game’s first 10 minutes, failed. They got a couple of shots on goal, and when the teams were back at even strength the Rangers had all the momentum. Less than a minute later, Straka scored his second goal.
It was a bitter loss for goalie David LeNeveu, who played brilliantly in a 6-2 victory over Edmonton earlier in the week.
This was the first of a four-game Western trip for the Rangers, who evened their record at 5-5.

GLENDALE, Ariz. - A few hours after being promoted from San Antonio, David LeNeveu made 32 saves and the Phoenix Coyotes defeated the Edmonton Oilers 6-2 on Thursday night.
Georges Laraque, who left Edmonton to sign a free-agent deal with Phoenix last summer, scored his first goal of the season for the Coyotes, who snapped a four-game losing streak. Zbynek Michalek, Ladislav Nagy, Oleg Saprykin, Owen Nolan and Donald MacLean also scored for Phoenix.
Fernando Pisani scored his first goal of the season and Petr Sykora added a goal for Edmonton, which lost for the second time in two nights. advertisement
LeNeveu was recalled Thursday to replace Mike Morrison, who was assigned to San Antonio after clearing waivers. Morrison had a 6.14 goals-against average in four games.
LeNeveu, who played 15 games with Phoenix last season, earned his fourth career victory.
Phoenix had lost its last four games by a combined score of 19-3. The Coyotes came into the game with four points, fewest in the Western Conference.
With Edmonton’s Marty Reasoner serving a hooking penalty, the Coyotes went ahead 1-0 on Michalek’s second goal of the season at 5:08 of the first period.
It took only 1:21 for the Oilers to tie it at 1-1. After LeNeveu stopped winger Ales Hemsky on a breakaway, Pisani beat LeNeveu with a wrist shot over the right shoulder. It was the first point in 10 games for Pisani, who was rewarded with a four-year, $10 million contract after scoring 14 goals in 24 playoff games last spring.
The Coyotes made it 2-1 on Nagy’s third goal of the season at 11:07 of the first period.
Then Laraque, not known as a scorer, created his own chance by shouldering Reasoner away from the puck, stickhandling along the goal line and backhanding a shot over Markkanen.
Edmonton coach Craig MacTavish replaced Markkanen with Dwayne Roloson, who gave up six goals in a 6-2 loss at Anaheim Wednesday night.
Notes: Coyotes captain RW Shane Doan (back) was scratched. … Sykora leads the NHL with three game-winning goals. … Markkanen had allowed one goal in his only previous start, a 2-1 victory over Vancouver Oct. 17. … Valley resident Nils Lofgren sang the national anthem. The Coyotes are 6-0 when Lofgren sings the anthem.

Bad back puts Doan on bench
Nick Piecoro
The Arizona Republic
Oct. 26, 2006 12:00 AM
Shane Doan underwent an MRI exam on his injured back Wednesday, and the Coyotes’ captain will miss at least one game and perhaps more.
Coach Wayne Gretzky said Doan would not play tonight against the visiting Edmonton Oilers, and although Gretzky didn’t rule out Doan for Saturday’s game against the New York Rangers, the more cautious approach would be for Doan to target the Nov. 3 game at Anaheim.
“Shane could be as early as two days or he could be two weeks,” Gretzky said. “The best thing for Shane might be to take Thursday and Saturday off.”
A Coyotes spokesman said the MRI didn’t reveal anything serious and that Doan just needs rest; Gretzky said earlier that Doan believes he pulled a muscle in his lower back.
“He really hasn’t been himself the last 10 to 12 days,” Gretzky said.
Doan said he expected the injury to improve more quickly than it has.
“It’s not getting as good as I thought it would get,” he said. “I’m pretty sure it’s nothing major; I just need to get it back to normal.”
In Doan’s absence, Gretzky said he probably would put Enver Lisin and Ladislav Nagy on a line with Jeremy Roenick.
“Enver’s been one of our best forwards, been a real bright spot for us,” he said. “(Nagy’s) last two games have been very strong. J.R., I think, has had a really good stretch of 10 games for us.”
Morrison sent down
Goalie Mike Morrison’s rough start cost him his roster spot, but Gretzky said he doesn’t anticipate the move being permanent.
Morrison, who had a 6.14 goals-against average in four games, was put on waivers Wednesday. If he clears, as expected, he would be assigned to the AHL’s San Antonio Rampage, the organization’s top affiliate.
“This is not a full-time demotion,” Gretzky said. “We’re going to let him go down for a little bit and find his game and get his confidence back. We’ll see what happens over the next seven to 10 days.”
David LeNeveu, who has a 3.92 GAA for San Antonio, is expected to be recalled once Morrison clears waivers this morning.
Penalty overkill
Entering Wednesday’s games, the Coyotes were the most penalized team in the NHL, a topic Gretzky addressed in a team meeting.
“We just talked about how we’re letting ourselves down,” he said. “What we talked about today in the locker room was being unselfish toward each other and understanding that we just cannot go into a hockey game each and every night and take two or three penalties in the first 10 minutes of the game.”
More moves
Center Mike Zigomanis was placed on the injured reserve list because of a groin injury. Defenseman Matt Jones and center Donald MacLean were recalled from San Antonio.
Jones played 16 games with the Coyotes as a rookie last season. MacLean, who had four goals in nine games for San Antonio, was the AHL MVP last season.

Valley native Aaron Matos has secured naming rights on the Phoenix Coyotes’ Glendale home.
“Welcome to Jobing.com Arena,” Matos, 34, said on Wednesday.
The deal will bring the team as much as $30 million in the next 10 years. Matos, of Phoenix, launched the Jobing.com Web site in 2000.
Today, the company has expanded its job-search services and its territory to seven states with 246 employees. The name change on the former Glendale Arena, a sporting and concert venue, is effective immediately.

Lowly Coyotes place Morrison on waivers
TSN.ca Staff
10/25/2006 12:36:22 PM
The Phoenix Coyotes placed goalie Mike Morrison on waivers on Wednesday, less than 24 hours after a lopsided 6-1 loss to the Calgary Flames.
He is 0-3 in four starts with the Coyotes this season with a 6.13 GAA and .790 save percentage. If he goes unclaimed by Noon et/9am pt on Thursday he’ll be sent to San Antonio of the AHL, and David LeNeveu would be called up to replace Morrison as Curtis Joseph’s backup.
Morrison signed a one-year contract in July with the Coyotes after playing 25 games last season for Edmonton and Ottawa.
He posted a 11-4-3 record in his first year in the NHL with a 2.95 goals-against average and .882 save percentage.
After 20 games with the Oilers, Morrison became expendable in Edmonton after the Oilers traded for Dwayne Roloson. Ottawa, looking for insurance while Dominik Hasek recovered from a groin injury, claimed Morrison off waivers.
