ANAHEIM - Captain Shane Doan practiced with teammates for the first time in nine days Thursday morning in Glendale, but he didn’t make the trip for tonight’s game against the Ducks.
It will be the third game Doan, who is nursing a mysterious back injury, will miss.
Coach Wayne Gretzky said he doesn’t want Doan back in the lineup until he’s completely healthy.
Given Doan, who said his lower back is more tight than sore, has scored just two goals in 10 games, there’s no reason to rush him back.
The injury is frustrating Doan because nobody seems to know exactly what’s wrong. A recent MRI showed no serious damage.
“It’s not like I know that if I play it gets worse or if I don’t play it gets better,” Doan said. “That’s what’s most frustrating. It’s difficult to come to the rink and not be doing what you think you should be doing. You want to help.”
Mini training camp
Tonight’s game is Phoenix’s first since Saturday.
After giving his players Sunday off, Gretzky worked them hard physically and mentally for four days during what some players labeled a mini training camp.
Defenseman Derek Morris called the workouts the best four practices of the season.
“You can see (confidence) coming back,” Morris said. “Plays are happening quicker. Passes were better. When you’re not winning, it’s good to get four days to work hard and get that work ethic back. We’ll try and carry that over into the game.”
Center Jeremy Roenick said it was a grueling week.
“It was a lot of work,” Roenick said. “I think a lot of guys might be more tired now than they were going into the break.”
Asked if he felt not playing games for a while helped the team become mentally refreshed, Roenick said: “Absolutely not. Not with this week of work. . . . We had four days of hard practices and a lot of thinking because of all the system stuff (that was implemented). There’s a lot of fatigue right now.”
Despite sensing that fatigue, Roenick said he never considered asking Gretzky to ease up.
“When you’re losing and not playing well, it’s kind of hard to bring up an issue like that,” Roenick said. “You’ve got to come in to work and leave it up to them that they made the right decisions. Our job is to come in and work hard when we’re told to come to work . . . .We needed to sharpen up a lot of things as a team and you’re not going to do that by sitting at home.”
Ice chips
Goalie Curtis Joseph is slated to start tonight’s game. It will be his first game since Oct. 24.
• Majority owner Jerry Moyes boarded the team’s flight before it left Phoenix to shake players’ hands and wish them luck.
• Roenick will serve as the grand marshal for the Casino Arizona 150, the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race on Nov. 10 at Phoenix International Raceway.

Hoffen wir mal, dass die Yotes heute Abend das umsetzen was sie nun so hart trainiert haben. Hoffentlich sind sie nocht zu platt…
