Coyotes rally for win, lose Comrie

With what’s left of their fan base losing interest at an alarming rate, the struggling Coyotes really had no choice but to win Saturday night’s game against the Los Angeles Kings at Jobing.com Arena.

Sensing that, they triumphed, and in a dramatic fashion that not only earned them two rare points, but undoubtedly won them back some fans.

“We need to win at home because we need our fans to know that we want to work and want to do what it takes to come out of this (slump) and we’re capable of coming out of this,” captain Shane Doan said.

Phoenix spotted the Kings a 3-1 lead in the first period, then scored the next five goals and won 6-4. That was the good news.

The bad news is points leader Mike Comrie is expected to miss about a month because of a fractured right foot.

Comrie, who suffered the injury Friday night against Anaheim yet finished that game, was scratched Saturday and is expected to have surgery either Monday or Tuesday.

The victory, at least temporarily, restores hope and some confidence for a team that desperately needs it heading into a four-day break, with home games against Dallas, San Jose and Minnesota waiting on the other side.

There were plenty of offensive stars Saturday, including Ladislav Nagy, who notched three assists.

Backup goalie David LeNeveu also played a key role with 38 saves in relief of a shaky Curtis Joseph.

Doan returns, scores 2
Doan returned to the lineup after missing three games because of a nagging back injury and scored two goals, including an acrobatic one 2:50 into the game. The three games Doan missed equaled the total number of games he missed in the past three seasons combined.

Looking for a goalie
Joseph started Saturday’s game, but coach Wayne Gretzky replaced him after he gave up two goals before the game was seven minutes old.

Joseph has allowed 16 goals in his past four starts and has been pulled three times already this season because of ineffectiveness.

“We haven’t lost confidence in him by any means,” Gretzky said. “A couple bad games doesn’t make a player’s career over. I just felt we needed a shakeup after their second goal went in.”

Nevertheless, sources confirmed Saturday the Coyotes are getting serious about trading for goaltending help and have discussed possible deals with Buffalo and San Jose.
