Doan doesn’t need surgery

Shane Doan does not need surgery on his ailing back, but he should not play for two to three weeks so it can heal properly.

That was the recommendation the Coyotes captain received from noted back specialist Dr. Robert Watkins on Friday, and the Coyotes will follow it.

Doan, who could not be reached for comment, flew to the Los Angeles area Friday for a consultation with Watkins, who is well respected in the professional sports community.

The specifics of Doan’s injury were not revealed.

The Coyotes (4-11-0-0) play nine games in the next three weeks.

All-Star nominees
The NHL’s Hockey Operations Department has placed Doan (four goals, five assists) and left wing Ladislav Nagy (three goals, seven assists) on the fan ballot for the 2007 All-Star Game.

From Wednesday through Jan. 2, fans can vote for the Western and Eastern conference All-Star starters at nhl.com.

The 2007 All-Star Game is scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 24 in Dallas.

Points leader Mike Comrie, who is out for a month because of a foot injury, was left off the ballot.

Gretzky on trades
Coach Wayne Gretzky said although the Coyotes are willing to discuss trades with other teams, fans shouldn’t expect a “drastic overhaul” of the roster.

“The reality is we’re always looking to get better because we’re 4-11,” Gretzky said Friday. “We wouldn’t be doing our job if we were sitting still saying this team’s great because obviously it’s not. We have a lot of nice pieces to it, but obviously we have things we need to do to make it better. In saying that, there’s going to be no sort of drastic overhaul here.”

Ice chips
Defenseman Nick Boynton suffered a foot injury near the end of Thursday’s 1-0 loss to Dallas and did not practice Friday. His playing status is day to day.

• Curtis Joseph is expected to start in goal tonight.

• San Jose forward Milan Michalek, the younger brother of Coyotes defenseman Zbynek Michalek, is tied for second on the Sharks with 18 points.

Doan to miss 2-3 weeks

By Matt Paulson, Tribune
November 11, 2006

The lower back injury that has forced Coyotes captain Shane Doan to miss four of the past five games could keep him sidelined until the end of the month.

Doan was examined in Los Angeles on Friday by back specialist Dr. Robert Watkins, who determined surgery was not necessary. However, the right wing will be kept off the ice for the next two to three weeks so he can work on strengthening the irritated lower back muscles which have which have caused stiffness and soreness of late.

“It’s one of those things where the longer you go, it seems to get worse and worse as the game goes on,” Doan said Thursday.

Doan’s status means the Coyotes will be without three of their top six forwards for an extended period of time. Mike Comrie (broken foot) is at least three weeks away from returning, and Steven Reinprecht (broken collarbone) won’t be back until the end of January at the earliest.

General manager Mike Barnett said the Coyotes, who have 21 players on their active roster, two shy of the maximum, won’t make any call-ups to fill in for Doan while he recovers.

Doan, who missed just three games the past three seasons combined, has four goals and nine points in 11 games this season.

BOYNTON INJURED

Defenseman Nick Boynton is also nursing an injury after taking a puck off his foot late in Thursday’s loss to Dallas. X-rays taken after the game were negative and a CT scan Friday confirmed there is no fracture.

Boynton, though, does have a bruised foot and is doubtful for tonight’s game.

ALL-STAR VOTING

Doan and left wing Ladislav Nagy are among the 100 players listed on this season’s NHL All-Star ballot.

Voting for the game, which will be held Jan. 24 in Dallas, will open Wednesday and run through Jan. 2, and can be done online at NHL.com.
