Coyotes trump Kings

GLENDALE, Ariz.- Ladislav Nagy returned from a one-game benching to score a goal and add three assists in the Phoenix Coyotes’ 7-4 victory over the Los Angeles Kings on Thursday night.

Mike Zigomanis had two goals and an assist for the Coyotes, who have won three of four. Oleg Saprykin, Patrick Fischer and Zbynek Michalek each had a goal and an assist. Shane Doan added a goal as well.

Nagy was back in the lineup after being benched by Phoenix coach Wayne Gretzky for the third period of Phoenix’s 4-0 loss to Minnesota on Friday. Nagy then was a healthy scratch Saturday for the Coyotes’ 2-1 win in St. Louis.

Derek Armstrong had two goals and an assist for the Kings, who had won two straight. Michael Cammalleri and Craig Conroy also scored for Los Angeles.

Fischer broke a 3-3 tie at 17:59 of the first period, beating reserve goalie Barry Brust on a long rebound from the low slot off Nagy’s shot.

Conroy tied the game 39 seconds earlier with a power-play goal from the bottom of the right circle.

Doan extended the Coyotes’ lead to 5-3 on a power-play goal 55 seconds into the third period, blasting a shot from beyond the top of the left circle over Brust’s glove. Armstrong made it 5-4 at 7:33 of the second when he took a pass from Tom Kostopoulos in front of the net, faked Curtis Joseph to the ice and scored into the open top half of the net.

Zigomanis put Phoenix ahead 6-4 with 8:46 remaining on a wrist shot from the left boards. Zigomanis added his second with 4:06 to go, redirecting Michalek’s drive over a ducking Brust.

Defenseman seeks to stick

Defenseman Travis Roche entered his debut with the Coyotes on Thursday with 10 games on his NHL résumé.

Before playing his 11th, Roche vowed to take a new approach in an effort to stay in the league permanently.

“The biggest thing for me is trying to stick with things that make me successful,” Roche, 28, said before taking the ice against the Los Angeles Kings. “The times in the past that I’ve come up (to the NHL), I’ve been a little tentative to do the things that I do when I’m down (in the minor leagues). This time, I’m at the point of my career where I’ve got nothing to lose so I’m going to play my game. If it works it works, if it doesn’t, it doesn’t.”

Asked to elaborate, Roche, who notched 89 points in the last two full seasons he spent in the American Hockey League with Chicago before signing with Phoenix in July, said he’s going to keep trying to make plays most players wouldn’t try to make.

“I’ve been a little tentative to do that at this level because it seems if you get down by one goal, that could be enough to decide the game,” he said.

Before Thursday, Roche had not played in the NHL since before the lockout. His longest stint the league came in 2003-04 when he played five games for Minnesota.

Roche played 28 shifts and was a plus-2 on Thursday night.

Special night
The Edmonton Oilers reportedly will stage a ceremony to retire Mark Messier’s number Feb. 27 when the Coyotes are in town for a game that night.

Coach Wayne Gretzky said he is excited that he and goaltending coach Grant Fuhr, both former teammates of Messier with Edmonton, will be able to witness the event.

The Oilers retired Paul Coffey’s number last season with Gretzky and the Coyotes in town for a game.

Asked if he felt all the hoopla that will surround the event would be distracting to him or the Coyotes, Gretzky said no.

“We’re thrilled that we’re going to be one of the teams there witnessing it,” Gretzky said. “It’s nothing but a positive. Teams should feed off something like that ”

Enforcer Georges Laraque, who was wearing a microphone for the TV broadcast, drew big laughs from those watching inside the arena when he smiled and told LA’s Raitis Ivanans “good luck” before they fought in the first period.

• Goalie Mike Morrison, who began the season as Curtis Joseph’s backup, was demoted once again, this time from San Antonio of the AHL to the Phoenix RoadRunners of the ECHL.

• Prospect Kevin Porter of the University of Michigan was named the Central Collegiate Hockey Association Player of the Month for November.

Porter, a junior forward, notched eight goals and 10 assists in nine games last month.

Coyotes offense explodes

Goals, goals, goals.

The Coyotes scored a season-high seven on Thursday night in an action-packed 7-4 victory over Los Angeles at Jobing.com Arena.

Left wing Ladislav Nagy returned to the lineup after a one-game benching for what coach Wayne Gretzky called “selfish” play vs. Minnesota last week and notched a goal and three assists to key Phoenix’s third win in its past four games and its fourth consecutive victory at home.

“I just told myself to go out there and do my thing and help the team,” Nagy said.

“I had to move on and have fun. If you don’t have fun, you’re not going to do your thing.”

The first period was wild with 23 shots, seven goals and two fights.

The Coyotes trailed 1-0 and 2-1 during that period, but Patrick Fischer put Phoenix ahead to stay when he scored with 2:01 left before the intermission.

“It was a fun game, but it’s not really the (type of) game we want,” Fischer said.

“We’ve got to play better defense. We got away with it tonight.”

Goalie Curtis Joseph played despite flulike symptoms and gave up two goals within the first five minutes.

Gretzky stuck with him, however, and Joseph finished with 31 saves.

Leading 5-4, Center Mike Zigomanis iced the victory with two third-period goals.

View from the press box
Center Jeremy Roenick was scratched from Thursday’s game, and not without a mini-controversy. Roenick, who missed the past three practices because of an upper respiratory illness, declared himself healthy after the morning skate, but coach Wayne Gretzky didn’t think Roenick would be able to play a solid game. That didn’t sit well with Roenick, who called himself “a healthy scratch.”
